This new account was found in a fourteenth-century roll, which belongs to the College of Arms. A full account of the roll, including its text and translation, was published in the English Historical Review, volume 115 (April 2000, pp.378-411). The authors are Olivier de Laborderie, John R. Maddicott and David A. Carpenter. The document, illuminated by the authors’ comments, adds considerably to our knowledge of the events of August 1265.
The Simon de Montfort Society makes grateful acknowledgement to the authors for permission to publish the translation, together with a brief summary of their assessment of its nature and significance, as a ‘Lion@ Occasional Paper. We trust that we have not grossly mangled their comments by too brutal a summary.
