The most useful and best referenced of the books on the battle is still that by David Carpenter, 1987. This has been supplemented by an excellent account by David Cox, which first presented the broad and simple structure for the battle which has now been confirmed and developed as a result of the newly discovered account, by Labordiere et al. Tony Spicer has also provided an alternative interpretation of the battle, which you can read by clicking here.  However, the paper by Laborderie et al. has rendered all previous studies of the battle outdated to some degree.

The broad political context within which the de Montfort rebellion should be viewed is discussed in numerous book, but one of the most recent short assessments is:

This identifies the site where Prince Edward’s army rendezvoused prior to the battle, enabling a clear view as to the approach of his troops to the battlefield, which has previously been a matter of considerable dispute, and provides good evidence to enable the positioning of the deployments and of the direction of attack and of the rout).

Clark, David. Battlefield Walks: Midlands, 1993.
The walk described by Clarke is largely that followed in the walk recommended here, except that at the time he was writing the Obelisk and Leicester Tower were not accessible.

bullet Getmapping. British Battles: Amazing Views, 2002.
Unfortunately they have taken a very closely constrained area as defined on the English Heritage plan and so omit the critical area of the Battle Well and the land to the north where the battle almost certainly took place.
bullet Kinross, John. Walking and Exploring The Battlefields of Britain. Newton Abbot: David and Charles, 1988.
Unfortunately the information here is somewhat out of date and does not provide a good guide to the field.

Contemporary Accounts

There are a number of original accounts that give details of the action. The book by David Carpenter, 1987 uses the evidence from most, but does not provide a comprehensive transcription and translation of them. Laborderie, Olivier, J. R. Maddicott, and David A. Carpenter. "The last hours of Simon de Montfort : a new account." English Historical Review, no. 115 (2000): 378-412 provides a translation of the newly discovered account.  The Simon de Montfort Society. The Last Hours of Simon de Montfort: A New Account, A Lion Occasional Paper. Evesham, undated, provides a copy of the text of the newly discovered account from the Laborderie translation.  Henry Richards Luard (ed.). Matthaei Parisiensis, monachi Sancti Albani, Chronica majora, London: Longman & Co., 1884, covers the chronicles and memorials of Great Britain and Ireland during the Middle Ages.  English Heritage. "Battlefield Report: Evesham, 1265." English Heritage, 1995, provides extracts from Matthew Paris.  Extracts relating to the battle from the Westminster Chronicle and the account recently discovered by Laborderie are both provided on this web site.  Please click below:
