Founder and president of the Simon de
Montfort Society, Ronald Coleman, died at his home in Charlton Kings on
April 24th 2004, aged 81.
An Evesham man with a great love of
the town and a deep interest in Simon de Montfort, Mr Coleman grew up on
Greenhill near the site of the Battle with which he was fascinated.
He founded the Simon de Montfort
Society in 1987 with the aim of keeping alive the memory of Simon de
Montfort and fan the flame that he had left, reminding people of that time
when national history touched local history, the Battle of Evesham.
A very gifted man, Mr Coleman was an
enthusiastic and active international aero modeller, furniture designer and
maker. He originally worked for H.H.Martyns, an international company,
working on many famous projects, including the Speaker's chair in the House
of Commons. Later he became a teacher of woodwork and following his
retirement he continued to use his skills for his family and friends, making
five grandmother clocks, two violins, a doll's house and furniture for his
home, in between painting landscapes.
Iris Pinkstone, chair of the Simon de
Montfort Society, said: "We shall miss him, his kindness, his friendship and
his interest. He was truly Simon's Man."
