Tony Spicer
|
In the 1960's Tony Spicer
studied history at Bristol University and the
London School of Economics where he wrote a
dissertation for his Master's degree on
The Battle of Poltava, 1709. He
subsequently qualified as a solicitor and practised in Worcester
for over 20 years. Reviving
his interest in history later in life
he joined the
Battlefields Trust as a
founder member in 1992. |
|
Over the years Tony has
organised a number of walks for the Trust.
Living as he does in
Malvern, local
battlefields such as Worcester and Evesham came to be walked most
frequently and he
wrote a book about the Battle of Worcester ("The
Battle of Worcester 1651"
by Tony Spicer published in 2002 by Paddy Griffith Associates ISBN
0-9521488-5-4).
In 1996 Tony led a
walk round the Evesham battlefield after the
Simon de Montfort Society's Annual Wreath Laying Ceremony
and this walk has been repeated each year since then.
Tony has used these walks, and other
private ones, to try
to reconcile the ground with the mediaeval sources.
He is not sure that we will ever know
exactly what happened at the Battle of Evesham
(there are a number of theories)
and Tony does not claim that his theory is
necessarily better than any of the others;
he does, however,
maintain that it is an arguable
alternative.
